KING'S Sustainability Education Draws Strong Response: Over 200 People Experience Low-Pressure Molding in the First Week

Sustainable Action

SmartEdge steps outside the factory, giving families a hands-on opportunity to explore bio-based materials, manufacturing technology, and environmental sustainability.

During the 2026 Taiwan Design Expo, KING'S Solution brought the SmartEdge benchtop low-pressure injection molding machine into the exhibition hall, making a factory molding process accessible to the public. Four “SmartEdge Bio-Based Type-C Charging Cable DIY” sessions were held during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, attracting more than 200 participants. Each session was limited to 50 people and began at 3:00 p.m. When the line opened at 2:40 p.m., all spots were filled almost immediately.

30 Seconds to Mold, 3 Minutes to Understand Manufacturing

Participants used a bio-based PA material derived partly from castor oil to complete the waterproof encapsulation of an airplane-shaped Type-C charging cable. The molding process takes only 30 seconds, while the complete three-minute experience includes an introduction to the material, safe operation, machine activation, observation of the molding process, and waterproof testing.

Learning About Bio-Based Materials Through Castor Plants

After learning that part of the material is derived from castor oil, visitors often asked, “Are castor plants grown in Taiwan?” The staff introduced the characteristics of the castor plant and its history of cultivation in Taiwan. They also explained the differences between plant-derived, bio-based, and biodegradable materials, helping visitors reconsider plastics and sustainable materials through their sources, manufacturing processes, durability, and applications.

Learning Begins with Children's Questions

The most common questions included: “Is this 3D printing?”, “Does bio-based material break down easily?”, and “Why is the illuminated charging cable placed in water?”

Many parents brought their children to the activity. One child even picked up a phone to record the entire manufacturing process. Starting with the children's questions, the staff introduced bio-based materials, temperature, pressure, molds, and waterproof encapsulation. The experience combined science, technology, engineering, art and design, and mathematics—the five areas of STEAM education—helping children understand how products are made through hands-on participation.

Turning Smart Manufacturing into a Small Science Classroom

The airplane shape reflects Taoyuan's identity as an important aviation city and naturally sparks children's curiosity. For KING'S, SmartEdge is more than a smart manufacturing machine. It can also become a small science classroom where children explore materials and manufacturing technology firsthand.

Thirty seconds is the time the machine needs to complete the molding process; three minutes is the time we spend helping each child understand manufacturing. KING'S hopes children take home more than a small airplane. We hope they also leave with a new question: “What can I make next?”
